ROGOZNICA

The Rogoznica peninsula is situated on the far southeastern part of the county of Šibenik and Knin. The well-indented bay of Rogoznica is completely protected by the Ražanj peninsula and the island of Smokvica from the eastern, southern and southwestern side, while its western shore is exposed to the influence of open sea. Safe anchorage made Rogoznica especially important even for the ancient seamen and passengers on the Adriatic coast. You just have to see the Rogoznica port full of fishing boats, trawlers and yachts while strong south wind and northeastern wind blow.

The town of Primošten can be found in documents dating from 1564 under the name of Capusta Cista. After it was founded the town was protected from Turk attacks by a stone wall with towers and it was connected with land by a bascule bridge, which was later substituted by an embankment which turned Primošten into a peninsula. To our days Primošten preserved the atmosphere and all architectonic characteristics of a mediaeval Mediterranean fishing town. The church of Sv. Juraj (St. George), built in 1485 on the highest point of the former island, overlooks the town. The church of Sv. Gospa od Milosti (Our Lady of Mercy) dating from 1553 and the chapel of St. Roko built in 1680 also attract visitors' attention.

Trogir is a picturesque town arranged with parks where every stone is a monument and its coast is surrounded from all sides by the sea. The town was settled in the 3rd century, but people lived in this area before. The Greek colony Tragurion was established by seamen, who came from the island Vis. Trogir was famous in the Roman Empire because of its excellent marble. A few reliefs from the antique history of Trogir are preserved like the one of Kairos (4th-3rd century B.C.) and a work, which represents a woman on a loom (2nd-1st century B.C.). Trogir has been under the rule of the Byzanthian Czar and his Exarch in Ravenna since Dalmatia became a region - a

themate of the East Roman Empire. The town Trogir has also survived a few wars, including the last Home War, so that it welcomed the end of the 20th century in an independent Croatia. The wealth and the variety of its cultural heritage and the interesting history of the town are the main reasons, why the town is since 1997 under the protection of the UNESCO. We can say without exaggeration that Trogir is an unavoidable holiday destination!
